Common Injuries from Auto Accidents

Subdural Hematoma

Often times when a vehicle is confronted with a sudden stop, the head is jerked forward and then back again, with the brain shifting very slightly inside the skull. Tissue and blood vessels can be damaged, and possibly resulting slow bleeding that can potentially put pressure on the brain. This type of injury is called subdural hematoma. Sometimes this is injury is not detected at the hospital and the patient does not realize its happening until they suffer from headaches, confusion and difficulty waking.

Whiplash

Another injury caused from the head snapping forward and back is whiplash. The head, neck, chest and spine are involved in causing whiplash. Soft tissue is pulled beyond normal limits and causes pain. Mild cases of whiplash are treated with over the counter anti-inflammatories and rest. More severe cases may be required to wear a neck brace to prevent the neck from bending backward. Recovery can take some time, and patients often feel twinges of pain long after the accident.
